Ready to Switch Pharmacies? Here Is How Easy It Can Be.

If your provider has recommended a compounded medication, or if you are already using one and want to explore working with a different pharmacy, the process of switching is usually straightforward.

At Avrio Pharmacy, we work with patients and providers every day to make transitions as smooth as possible. Whether you are new to compounding or moving over from another pharmacy, here is what you need to know.

Why patients sometimes switch pharmacies

There are many reasons someone might look for a different compounding pharmacy. Some are searching for better communication or faster turnaround. Others are following a providers recommendation who has established a relationship with a specific pharmacy.

In some cases, a patient may need a medication formulation that requires a particular specialty or licensed state to dispense or access to specialized formulations (custom doses, allergen-free options, unique forms like liquids, creams, or troches).

Whatever the reason, you have options, and the process is simpler than most people expect.

Step-by-step: how to switch:

1

Talk to your provider first

Because compounded medications require a valid prescription from a licensed healthcare provider, the easiest way to switch is to let your provider know. They can send a new prescription directly to Avrio Pharmacy. Many providers are already familiar with the process.

2

Ask your provider to send the prescription directly

Your provider can contact Avrio by fax, phone, or through an EMR integration. This is often the fastest path and requires nothing extra from you.

3

Bring in a hard copy

If you have a valid paper prescription, you can bring it directly to our Scottsdale location. Our team will get it entered and reach out if anything else is needed. Due to the complexity of compounding medications, and the fact that most cannot be ready the same day, we only recommend this option if you don’t mind dropping off the prescription and then coming back to pick it up a few business days later once it is ready.

4

Call us and we can help

Not sure where to start? Give us a call! Our team can walk you through what is needed and, if appropriate, reach out to your provider’s office on your behalf to coordinate the transfer.

Heads Up: Unlike most commercially manufactured medications, compounded prescriptions often cannot be transferred between pharmacies in the same way standard retail prescriptions can. In many cases, a new prescription from your provider is the simplest and fastest option.

A note for veterinary patients
