Understanding Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP):

Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) is a severe and often fatal disease caused by certain strains of the feline coronavirus (FCV). FIP causes inflammation of the abdominal lining (peritonitis) and can lead to fluid accumulation, and severe organ damage.

The disease manifests in two major forms: the “wet” form, characterized by fluid buildup in the abdomen or chest, and the “dry” form, which leads to the formation of granulomas in organs like the liver, kidneys, and brain.

Symptoms of FIP

Feline infectious peritonitis can be challenging to diagnose because its symptoms can be similar to those of other diseases. The symptoms can also vary depending on whether the disease is in its “wet” or “dry” form. See common symptoms of FIP below.

Persistent Fever

Cats with FIP often have a fever that does not respond to antibiotics.

Lethargy

Affected cats may become very lethargic and show a lack of energy.

Weight Loss

Significant and unexplained weight loss is common in cats with FIP.

Loss of Appetite

Cats may refuse to eat, leading to further weight loss and weakness.

Abdomen

Fluid buildup in the abdomen can cause a swollen, pot-bellied appearance.

Chest

Fluid in the chest can lead to breathing difficulties.

Liver and Kidneys

GS Treatment Protocol:

Treatment Duration: Based on Dr. Pedersen’s original field trial, the recommended treatment is at least 12 weeks (84 days) of daily subcutaneous injections or oral medication. Blood work should be checked at diagnosis, day 30, day 60, and day 80 (just before the end of the 12-week treatment period) to confirm if the treatment can be stopped.

Administration: Oral tablets are given once daily and are dosed based on the cat’s weight, the type of FIP being treated, and the clinical response after treatment initiation. Injections are given subcutaneously (just under the skin) every 24 hours, ideally at the same time each day. The oral solution is also typically given once every 24 hours.

Side Effects: The oral formulations may cause mild GI upset, lethargy, increased thirst, and temporary elevated kidney/liver values (which typically resolves after stopping treatment). GS injections have similar side effects as the oral formulations, along with pain at the injection site, which is temporary. Some cats may develop injection-site sores.

1. What should I do if my cat vomits after taking the GS tablet?

If your cat vomits within 1 hours of administering the pill(s), it is typically recommended to give another full dose. Always check with your veterinarian or care team member to discuss dosing questions.

2. Why is my cats dose different with oral GS than the injectable GS that my veterinarian administered?

Oral dosing with GS will require a higher dose of the tablet to account for differences in the bioavailability of the tablet versus the injectable.

3. I can find GS from online pharmacies, why should I choose Avrio for the treatment?

There are many online pharmacies that sell GS tablets among other medications. Most of the pharmacies are located outside of the US and are not sourcing their active ingredients from FDA registered wholesalers. The FDA often warns about the risks from ordering from unknown sources. At Avrio Pharmacy, we only source GS-441524 from FDA registered wholesalers and review a certificate of analysis (CoA) prior to dispensing to any patients.

4. Is FIP contagious?

FIP is not contagious and therefore not necessary to separate your FIP kitty from other cats in the home.

5. What should I do if my cat develops diarrhea?

A lot of cats develop diarrhea in the beginning of treatment. Using a probiotic, 100% pumpkin puree, B12 injections, or antibiotics like metronidazole may be several options that your veterinarian may recommend.
